World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was commemorated in San Francisco today, as it was in the rest of the world.

These volunteers in San Francisco, are associated with the San Francisco AIDS Fundation.

Meanwhile, French First Lady Carla Bruni has agreed to serve as Global Ambassador against AIDS, effective December 1, 2008.

The tree is finally ready and the skating rink located at Union Square is getting more visitors of all ages. It really looks like fun, and I'll admit I'm very tempted to set foot on ice.

I love looking at windows, whether through them (inside looking out, or outside looking in) or at them ... These windows made me feel optimistic for some reason.

J'aime regarder les fenêtres depuis toujours, de l'extérieur, de l'intérieur, à travers pour voir ce qu'il y a d'intéssant de l'autre coté ou simplement regarder les fenêtres elles-mêmes ... Ces fenêtres m'ont egayée, je ne sais pas pourquoi.

It's not as easy as it looks to create a window display with a life size horse and a bunch of manequins, according to very specific instructions, in a very small space.

Do you dream? This photograph above is a shot of my computer screen (I guess I should have cropped it a little, sorry) after I had entered the fabulous world of Dreamlines.

My old camera always frustrated me because it was so slow... Every time I thought I was taking a picture of one thing, I ended up recordikng that very same thing (or quite another!) about 9 seconds later...

Like this picture I shot in Paris. Boy, did I have a surprise when I saw what I shot on the monitor! Well, since every time I run across this picture, it always cracks me up, I thought I'd share.

Did you ever take a picture of something kind of like this, by accident?

I was driving up the Oakland hill last week and thought the sunset looked kind of pretty and would probably make a good picture. So, I parked my car where I could, walked over the other side of the street to get an unobstructed view, and noticed that in the time it took to do just this, the sun had practically disappeared on the other side of Mt. Tam... (I'm reasonably sure it's Mt. Tam). Oh, well, better luck next time, I guess. I still got a little bit of color on that shot, so here you go.

Opening of Contemporary Jewish Museum San Francisco

The San Francisco Contemporary Jewish Museum just opened today south of Market, just a couple of steps away from the SFMOMA and the Moscone Center. The entrance was free today, and many people took advantage of the Grand Opening to check out the exhibits.

As soon as the dust settled, I will probably go back and check out the William Steig exhibit, which looked really fun and interesting. Look for additional pictures of the inside of the structure in a few days.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum is having a number of free tours and exhibits this week. Check out the CJM website for further details if you are interested.

Coca-Cola Nostalgia

I first saw this old Coca-Cola advertisement over 20 years ago when I first went to live in San Rafael, Marin County, California. The wall is located on "B" Street, between 2d St. and 3rd St. In my memory, it was much brighter and much bigger, and I could have sworn there was a giant bottle of Coca-Cola, right there in the middle, too, so I was a little surprised to see the ad practically faded out when I drove by recently. But years tend to transform memories (and old walls, as well).

I understand part of the building is undergoing renovation at the moment and the day I was taking the picture, the construction crew told me that an artist is supposed to be coming in soon to renovate the Coca-Cola ad, as well. Maybe I'll check again in a few weeks to see how the wall renovation is coming along.

In the meantime, I am dedicating this picture to Donald Kinney, a local photographer and fellow blogger, who generously updates several blogs on a daily basis with gorgeous pictures taken all over the Bay Area. Check out his photographs and his daily blog when you get a chance, you really won't regret it.

By the way, does anybody know anything about Victory Grocery in San Rafael, and how long ago would a pack of Coca-Cola bottles like the one on the wall have sold for 25 cents? I'm guessing WW2 era because of the "Victory" in the name, but I really don't know and couldn't find anything on the Internet. Anyone?

Bay Area commuter going home

Un voyageur de la Bay Area qui rentre chez lui

The other day I showed you a "typical day" in San Francisco, with guy walking around wearing a grape suit. But sometimes, the most unusual - even bizarre - people can be seen when you ride MUNI or BART. This young guy was just an ordinary commuter going home on BART at the end of a work-day, but I like the design of his skateboard so I thought I'd post it. See you soon!

L'autre jour je vous ai montré un "jour typique" à San Francisco, avec un mec se promenait deguisé en grape de raisins. Mais les gens les plus intéressants - pour ne pas dire carrément bizarres - on les voit souvent dans transports en commun de la Baie, surtout BART et MUNI. Celui là, c'est juste un jeune qui rentre chez lui à la fin de la journée. Mais j'ai trouvé son skate sympa, alors je me suis dit pourquoi pas le poster. A bientôt!

Bay Bridge on Sunny Sunday Afternoon

This shot of the Bay Bridge was taken on the Waterfront, in the area between the Ferry Building and the AT&T Baseball Park. The orange arc on top is a piece of the sculpture called scuplture called Cupid's Span, a relatively new addition to the City. I will show you more shots of that sculpture and, of course, the AT&T park, in the next couple of posts.

Ce que vous voyez est le Bay Bridge, photographié depuis le Waterfront, entre le Ferry Building et le Baseball Park AT&T. The line of people waiting to get into the San Francisco Apple store to get their coveted iPhone was already wrapped around the block when I passed by there in the morning. Some of these people had been in line since ... the day before!

Les gens faisaient déjà la queue devant le magasin et autour du pathé de maison pour acheter leur iPhones quand je suis passé devant Apple, San Francisco, ce matin. Certains faisaient la queue depuis ... le jour d'avant!

This picture of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was taken during the recent Oracle OpenWorld convention at the Moscone Center, late October 2006. If you look carefully behind the tree, you can see a piece of a large white tent, part of the temporary Exhibit. I will have to return another day and try to get you guys "proper" pictures of the structure, inside and out. In the meantime, you might want to check out these photographs.

The upside of all the rain the Bay Area has received over the last few weeks is that the flowers of the neighborhood are starting to look real happy. The people, on the other hand, have had just about enough of all this rain.

This car whose plaque reads "Poubelle" (means "Garbage" in French) can be seen frequently around Bush Street, San Francisco, not far from the French Consulat. Isn't it gorgeous?!! There will always be special place in my heart for all 2 CV's because they symbolize my childhood in France.

Cette voiture immatriculée "Poubelle" est souvent garée près la rue Bush, à San Francisco, pas loin du Consulat Français. Elle est belle, vous trouvez pas? Je garderai toujours une petite place au fond du coeur pour les deux chevaux car elles représentent mon enfance en France.
